I’m probably the very last person who would fall for a drums solo. All jokes about drummers aside, to my ears, there is only a handful of drummers who consistently bring the best of their performance skills, musicality, feel for the groove in the context of the song. More often than not, a drums solo turns out to be a collection of fills, rolls and patterns that are more a showcase of technical skills than a music piece.
This video of Brian Tichy from his tour with Foreigner shows what a good live drums solo can be: a captivating mix of skills, showmanship and execution: working the drums and working the crowd at the same time.
Well worth watching. I feel like grabbing my guitar and cranking up the volume to eleven.
